Detroit Loses a Hero – 1103th Edition

I’ll start with the news story, then add my own personal touch to it.

RIP Will Garlington

1964 – 2009

Quote:

Members of the Detroit Emergency Medical Services Association,

It is with great sadness and pain that I must notify you that on December 25, 2009 I was notified as to a tragic accident that resulted in the death of our brother and friend William Garlington. Will was traveling in Canada near his other home and was broadsided on the driver’s side of his vehicle. It was stated that he was extricated and could not be revived.

William was a Paramedic with over twenty-two years of service to the City of Detroit, a devoted father and a member of the community. William served as a trustee for the DEMSA Executive Board and was an integral part of furthering our organization to where it is today. His many years as a paramedic and instructor allowed our membership to realize how important he was to bringing good to our organization. He is survived by two daughters ages 9 and 11, his father and a sister.

I can’t emphasize enough, how difficult this will be for us all to recover from. This has left us wounded with broken hearts and sad souls but his spirit will live on in all that he touched and carry us through this difficult time. I implore all of you to talk about William and remember him so that his memory will live strong in our history. Should you need anyone to talk to regarding the sadness this brings the department has notified the department chaplains and they are available anytime.

Will has been a close friend and he will be truly missed by all of us. May you rest in peace brotherÂ…

Now my side of this. A Prayer Request Letter I sent to my church, and friends. I now ask the same of you, any of you who do pray that is.

I’m incredibly saddened to have to ask for this, on Christmas of all days, but a friend of mine died sometime during the afternoon on 12/25/09. He was T-Boned by a truck on his way home from taking care of some business in Canada. He was a Paramedic on the Detroit Fire / EMS Department. His name is Will Garlington. I’ve only met him once or twice, but I’m incredibly saddened to learn that he’s died. The saddest thing to me is that he will no longer be able to touch the lives of any more patients, and will no longer be able to save countless others he may have came into contact with.

I barely knew him, and in fact met him a week ago today. I was eating dinner with one of my best friends and was introduced to him then. It’s incredibly disheartening to learn this, and a huge reality check. I see how fragile life is every day, yet this is a much more powerful message. The people I usually work on are on the last legs of their lives, he was still in the prime of his.

He will be greatly missed. I need your prayer for my friend Nicole, she’s the one who introduced me, and my friend Michelle, who after years of abusive relationships finally found a truly good man, and two weeks later he was snatched out of her life. Please also keep his sister, nieces, and nephews in your prayers.

Thank you all, and may God Bless you.
